Downtown Lansing’s Principal Shopping District (PSD) office, in partnership with the Michigan Historical Museum and the City of Lansing, launched a easy-to-use website for Michigan’s newest destination attraction, the Michigan Walk of Fame at michiganwalkoffame.com.
Located in downtown Lansing’s historic commercial district, the Walk of Fame will honor Michigan residents, past and present, who have made significant contributions to the state of Michigan and/or the United States. The website, designed by Lansing-based Spartan Internet, includes an online nomination form and gives visitors the opportunity to support the Michigan Walk of Fame with online giving.
The Michigan Walk of Fame was conceived by the Principal Shopping District to celebrate the accomplishments of great Michiganians; promote Lansing as Michigan’s capital city; and create a permanent tourist attraction in downtown Lansing, which is currently undergoing an economic revival.
Walk of Fame inductees will be honored with an 18” x 30” bronze plaque imbedded in downtown Lansing sidewalks. Each plaque will feature a star containing the inductee’s name situated above a description of the person’s contribution.
The Michigan Historical Museum will assist in coordinating the selection process, research nominee contributions, and write Walk of Fame plaque descriptions with assistance from staff of the Michigan Historical Center. Twelve inductees will be honored in 2006 with installation planned for Michigan Week.
The Michigan Walk of Fame will be funded through individual and corporate sponsorships. Downtown Lansing Inc., the PSD’s 501(c)3 agency, will coordinate the project’s fundraising efforts. The Michigan Walk of Fame will operate at no cost to the state of Michigan or the city of Lansing.
The Lansing Principal Shopping District was created to improve the downtown business climate and represents over 1,000 businesses.
The Michigan Historical Museum is part of the Michigan Historical Center, an agency of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries, Housed in the Michigan Library and Historical Center in downtown Lansing.
